Prātaḥ Sandhyā — Morning Prayer

ॐ अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा । यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्यभ्यन्तरः शुचिः ॥

om apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato'pi vā । yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bāhyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥ ॥

Whether pure or impure, in whatever state one may be, whoever remembers the lotus-eyed Lord becomes pure both within and without.

ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते । पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥

om pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idaṁ pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate । pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam evāvaśiṣyate ॥

That is whole. This is whole. From wholeness, wholeness arises. When wholeness is taken from wholeness, wholeness alone remains.

ॐ कूर्चे वाच्ये वासिष्ठ शृणु वै पुण्डरीकाक्ष । यन्न जानामि तत् ब्रूहि कस्मै ज्ञानं प्रदास्यसि ॥

om kūrce vācye vāsiṣṭha śṛṇu vai puṇḍarīkākṣa । yan na jānāmi tad brūhi kasmai jñānaṁ pradāsyasi ॥

O Vasishtha, O lotus-eyed one, I am seated in the Kurca posture and speaking. That which I do not know, please tell me — to whom will you give this knowledge?

ॐ अच्युताय नमः । ॐ अनन्ताय नमः । ॐ गोविन्दाय नमः । ॐ केशवाय नमः । दन्तोद्धरणाय नमः । दधिवातोदकं गृह्णामि ॥

om acyutāya namaḥ । om anantāya namaḥ । om govindāya namaḥ । om keśavāya namaḥ । dantoddharaṇāya namaḥ । dadhivātodakaṁ gṛhṇāmi ॥

Salutations to Achyuta, Ananta, Govinda, and Kesava. Salutations to the toothpick-holder. I take the water for sipping.

ॐ सहस्रशीर्षा देवो विश्वाक्षो विश्वशम्भुः । विश्वनाथो विश्वात्मा विश्वपानो हरिः हरिः ॥

om sahasraśīrṣā deho viśvākṣo viśvaśambhuḥ । viśvanātho viśvātmā viśvapāno hariḥ hariḥ ॥

Om. The Lord has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet. He pervades the entire universe, yet extends beyond it. He is the Lord of all, the Self of all, the sustainer of all. He is Hari.

ॐ भूः ॐ भुवः ॐ स्वः ॐ महः ॐ जनः ॐ तपः ॐ सत्यम् । ॐ तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

om bhuḥ om bhuvaḥ om svaḥ om mahaḥ om janaḥ oṁ tapaḥ om satyam । om tat savitur vareṇyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi । dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt ॥

Om, Earth. Om, Atmosphere. Om, Heaven. Om, Mahas. Om, Jana. Om, Tapa. Om, Satya. We meditate upon the most excellent glory of the divine Sun Savita. May he illuminate our intellect.

ॐ जपाकुसुमसङ्काशं काश्यपायं महद्द्युतिम् । तमोहरिं सर्वपापज्ञं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम् ॥

om japākusuma-saṅkāśaṁ kāśyapāyaṁ mahad-dyutim । tamohariṁ sarva-pāpa-jñaṁ praṇato'smi divākaram ॥

Om. I bow to the Sun God, radiant as the red hibiscus flower, son of Kashyapa, of great brilliance, who destroys darkness and knows all sins.

ॐ सूर्यात्मा जातवेदसे नमो ज्योतिर्मयाय धीमहि । यो नः प्रचोदयात् सविता तमसो हन्ता प्रकाशकृत् ॥

om sūryātmā jātavedase namo jyotirmayāya dhīmahi । yo naḥ pracodayāt savitā tamaso hantā prakāśakṛt ॥

Om. The Sun, the Self of all, who is all-knowing — we meditate upon that luminous being who is the illuminator, the destroyer of darkness, the creator of light.

ॐ गलायां वस्त्रमारोप्य पाणिना धारयेत् स्मरेत् । अच्युताय नमः प्रोक्त्वा पादौ प्रक्षालयेत् द्वौ ॥

om galāyāṁ vastram āropya pāṇinā dhārayet smaret । acyutāya namaḥ proktvā pādau prakṣālayet dvau ॥

Placing the cloth on the shoulder, holding it with the hand, remembering the Lord, reciting 'Salutations to Achyuta,' one should wash both feet.

ॐ पवित्रे ण्णवोच्चिष्टः स्मरणीयो दिवाकरः । यो नो ददाति वसुमत् स नः श्रेयांसि दर्शयेत् ॥

om pavitre ṇṇavocciṣṭaḥ smaraṇīyo divākaraḥ । yo no dadāti vasumat sa naḥ śreyāṁsi darśayet ॥

Purified by the water of the Pavitra, may the all-knowing Sun God, who bestows wealth upon us, show us the path to auspiciousness.
