Prathamo'dhyayah — Ganapati & Shiva Sankalpa

वन्दे सिद्धिप्रदं देवं गणेशं प्रियपालकम् । विश्वगर्भं च विघ्नेशं अनादिं मङ्गलं विभूम् ॥

vande siddhipradaṁ devaṁ gaṇeśaṁ priyapālakam । viśvagarbhaṁ ca vighneśaṁ anādiṁ maṅgalaṁ vibhūm ॥

I bow to Lord Ganesha, bestower of success, protector of the beloved, the embryo of the universe, the lord of obstacles, the beginningless, the auspicious, the all-pervading.

ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारु चन्द्रवतंसम् । रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम् ॥ १॥

dhyāyennityaṁ maheśaṁ rajatagirinibhaṁ cāru candravataṁsam । ratnākalpojjvalāṅgaṁ paraśumṛgavarābhītihastaṁ prasannam ॥ 1॥

Always meditate upon the great Lord Shiva, radiant as a silver mountain, adorned with a beautiful crescent moon, His body gleaming like jewels, holding an axe and deer, bestowing fearlessness, and ever gracious.

पद्मासीनं समन्तात्स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृतिं वसानम् । विश्वाद्यं विश्ववन्द्यं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम् ॥ २॥

padmāsīnaṁ samantātstutamamaragaṇairvyāghrakṛtiṁ vasānam । viśvādyaṁ viśvavandyaṁ nikhilabhayaharaṁ pañcavaktraṁ trinetram ॥ 2॥

Seated on a lotus, praised on all sides by hosts of gods, wearing a tiger skin, the first cause of the universe, worshipped by all, remover of all fears, five-faced and three-eyed.

ग॒णानां॑ त्वा ग॒णप॑तिग्ं हवामहे प्रि॒याणां॑ त्वा प्रि॒यप॑तिग्ं हवामहे नि॒धीनां॑ त्वा॑ निधि॒पति॑ग्ं हवामहे वसो मम । आहम॑जानि गर्भ॒धमा त्वम॑जासि गर्भ॒धम् ॥ १॥

gaṇānāṁ tvā gaṇapatiṁ havāmahe priyāṇāṁ tvā priyapatiṁ havāmahe nidhīnāṁ tvā nidhipatiṁ havāmahe vaso mama । āhamajāni garbhadhamā tvamajāsi garbhadham ॥ 1॥

We invoke you as the lord of hosts, lord of the beloved, lord of treasures. You were born first from the cosmic womb; I was born after — you are the source of all creation.

गा॒य॒त्री त्रि॒ष्टुब्जग॑त्यनु॒ष्टुप्प॒ङ्क्त्या स॒ह । बृ॒ह॒त्युष्णिहा॑ क॒कुप्सू॒चीभिः॑ शम्यन्तु त्वा ॥ २॥

gāyatrī triṣṭubjagatyanuṣṭuppaṅktyā saha । bṛhatyuṣṇihā kakupsūcībhiḥ śamyantu tvā ॥ 2॥

By the Gayatri, Tristubh, Jagati, Anushtubh metres and their series, by Brihati, Ushnih, Kakub, and Anustubh — may these metres pacify you.

द्विप॑दा॒याश्चतु॑ष्पदा॒स्त्रिप॑दा॒याश्च॒षट्प॑दाः । विच्छ॑न्दा॒ याश्च॒ सच्छ॑न्दास्सू॒चीभिः॑ शम्यन्तु त्वा ॥ ३॥

dvipadāyāścatuṣpadāstripadāyāścaṣaṭpadāḥ । vicchandā yāśca sacchandāssūcībhiḥ śamyantu tvā ॥ 3॥

By the two-footed, four-footed, three-footed, and six-footed metres, by the divergent and consonant metres — may all these metres pacify you.

स॒हस्तो॑मास्स॒हच्छ॑न्दस आ॒वृतः॑ स॒हप्र॑मा॒ ऋष॑यस्स॒प्त दै॑व्याः । पूर्वे॑षां॒ पन्था॑मनु॒दृश्य॒ धीरा॑ अ॒न्वाले॑भिरे र॒थ्यो न र॒श्मीन् ॥ ४॥

sahastomāssaḥacchandasa āvṛtaḥ sahapramā ṛṣayaḥ sapta daivyāḥ । pūrveṣāṁ panthāmanudṛśya dhīrā anvālebhire rathyo na raśmīn ॥ 4॥

With the Sahastoma and other Soma ceremonies, the seven divine seers of brilliant insight, following the ancient paths, guided us like charioteers holding the reins.

यज्जाग्र॑तो दू॒रमु॒दैति॒ दैवं॒ तदु॑ सु॒प्तस्य॒ तथै॒वैति॑ । दू॒रङ्ग॒मञ्ज्योति॑षां॒ ज्योति॒रेकं॒ तन्मे॒ मनः॑ शि॒वस॑ङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥ १॥

yajjāgrato dūramudaiti daivaṁ tadu suptasya tathaivaiti । dūraṅgamajyotiṣāṁ jyotirekaṁ tanme manaḥ śivasaṅkalpamastu ॥ 1॥

What shines far when one is awake, that same light appears in sleep. The distant light of all lights, one alone — may my mind be filled with auspicious thoughts of Shiva.

येन॒ कर्मा॑ण्य॒पसो॑ मनी॒षिणो॑ य॒ज्ञे कृ॒ण्वन्ति॑ वि॒दथे॑षु॒ धीराः॑ । यद॑पू॒र्वं-यँ॒क्षम॒न्तः प्र॒जानां॒ तन्मे॒ मनः॑ शि॒वस॑ङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥ २॥

yena karmāṇyapaso manīṣiṇo yajñe kṛṇvanti vidatheṣu dhīrāḥ । yadapūrvaṁ yakṣamantaḥ prajānāṁ tanme manaḥ śivasaṅkalpamastu ॥ 2॥

By which the wise and active priests perform the sacred works in the assemblies — that ancient mystery within all beings — may my mind be filled with Shiva's auspicious resolve.

यत्प्र॒ज्ञान॑मु॒त चेतो॒ धृति॑श्च॒ यज्ज्योति॑र॒न्तर॒मृतं॑ प्र॒जासु॑ । यस्मा॒न्न-ऽऋ॒ते कि-ञ्च॒न कर्म॑ क्रि॒यते॒ तन्मे॒ मनः॑ शि॒वस॑ङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥ ३॥

yatprajñānamuta ceto dhṛtiśca yajjyotirantaramṛtaṁ prajāsu । yasmānna ṛte kiñcana karma kriyate tanme manaḥ śivasaṅkalpamastu ॥ 3॥

That which is consciousness, mind, resolve, the inner light and immortality among beings, without which no action is performed — may my mind be filled with Shiva's auspicious resolve.

येनेद-म्भू॒त-म्भुव॑न-म्भवि॒ष्यत्परि॑गृहीतम॒मृते॑न॒ सर्व॑म् । येन॑ य॒ज्ञस्ता॒यते॑ स॒प्तहो॑ता॒ तन्मे॒ मनः॑ शि॒वस॑ङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥ ४॥

yenedaṁ bhūtaṁ bhuvanaṁ bhaviṣyatparigṛhītamamṛtena sarvam । yena yajñastāyate saptahotā tanme manaḥ śivasaṅkalpamastu ॥ 4॥

By which all that is, was, and will be is pervaded with immortality, by which the sacrifice with its seven priests is sustained — may my mind be filled with Shiva's auspicious resolve.

यस्मि॒न्नृच॒-स्साम॒ यजू॑ग्ंषि॒ यस्मि॒-न्प्रति॑ष्ठिता रथना॒भावि॑वा॒राः । यस्मि॑ग्ंश्चि॒त्तग्ं सर्व॒मोतं॑ प्र॒जानां॒ तन्मे॒ मनः॑ शि॒वस॑ङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥ ५॥

yasmin ṛcaḥ sāma yajūṅṣi yasmin pratiṣṭhitā rathanābhāvivārāḥ । yasmiṅścittaṁ sarvamotaṁ prajānāṁ tanme manaḥ śivasaṅkalpamastu ॥ 5॥

In whom the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas are established, like spokes in the hub of a wheel, in whom the consciousness of all beings is interwoven — may my mind be filled with Shiva's auspicious resolve.

सु॒षा॒र॒थिरश्वा॑निव॒ यन्म॑नु॒ष्या॒न्नेनी॒यतेऽभीशु॑भिर्वा॒जिन॑ इव । हृ॒त्प्रति॑ष्ठं॒ यद॑जि॒रञ्जवि॑ष्ठं॒ तन्मे॒ मनः॑ शि॒वस॑ङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥ ६॥

suṣārathirashvāniva yanmanuṣyānnenīyate'bhīśubhirvājina iva । hṛtpratiṣṭhaṁ yadajirajaviṣṭhaṁ tanme manaḥ śivasaṅkalpamastu ॥ 6॥

As a skilled charioteer guides horses with reins, so does that guide humans. Established in the heart, swift and most rapid — may my mind be filled with Shiva's auspicious resolve.
